Have you ever been to a cellcert? Not a concert - a cellcert. Someone takes a cell phone to a gigi and everyone else dials in to a conference line. You hear what sounds like aliens with buzzsaws for most of the call, but every now and then, you hear the band and it's great if you're a huge fan.

Today - a father and son were playing street hockey in our cul-de-sac. The kid reaches into his pocket to pick up his phone. He must have been around 13. His DAD was standing on the other side of the street waiting for his KID to be done with his call.

So DAD is making the effort to play with his kid, and KID has important phone business to tend to... yeah right - how important can a 13 year old's call be?

I don't know what to make of it either - maybe I'm more cynical - but I think as a society, we're losing our ability to be in "the present". It's like with the phone call, we want to be more than one place at the same time, or with more than one person at the same time.

Maybe I'm a luddite, but I've got a cell phone which I refuse to carry and answer, but i do use it to call - rarely.
